Background: This gene encodes a member of the conserved Wnt family of secreted signaling proteins. The encoded protein is essential for correct patterning of the mesoderm and neural ectoderm during gastrulation. In zebrafish, two similar, functional proteins are co-transcribed from a single bicistronic mRNA.
