Background:MT-ND1 is a Protein Coding gene. Core subunit of the mitochondrial membrane respiratory chain NADH dehydrogenase (Complex I) that is believed to belong to the minimal assembly required for catalysis. Complex I functions in the transfer of electrons from NADH to the respiratory chain. The immediate electron acceptor for the enzyme is believed to be ubiquinone. Diseases associated with MT-ND1 include melas syndrome and leber hereditary optic neuropathy. Among its related pathways are Metabolism and Respiratory electron transport, ATP synthesis by chemiosmotic coupling, and heat production by uncoupling proteins. Gene Ontology (GO) annotations related to this gene include NADH dehydrogenase (ubiquinone) activity.
