Plasmids are extrachromosomal, circular DNA molecules that exist independently of the chromosomal DNA in bacteria and yeast. These plasmids often carry genes that confer specific traits, such as antibiotic resistance or the ability to produce certain proteins. Once extracted, these plasmids can be used in molecular cloning, gene expression studies, site-directed mutagenesis, recombinant DNA technology, and antibiotic resistance marker studies.
