Background:Human Galectin-1 also named BHL, Galaptin, GBP, L- 14 and LGALS1, is belonging to the galectins family and it is encoded by the LGALS1 gene in human. Galectin-1 is expressed by the endometrial stromal cells throughout the menstrual cycle. Galectin-1 contains a single carbohydrate recognition domain through which it can bind glycans both as a monomer and as a homodimer. Dimers are non-covenantly bound and will spontaneou sly disassociate in low concentration. Galectin -1 may act as an autocrine negative growth factor that regulates cell proliferation. Galectin - 1 is thought to play a role in the immunosuppression required for a successful pregnancy. Human Galectin-1 shares 88 %-90 % amino acid sequence identity with rat and mouse.
