The SPINK1 gene encodes pancreatic secretory trypsin inhibitor, which is secreted from pancreatic acinar cells into pancreatic juice. Its physiologic role was thought to be the prevention of trypsin-catalyzed premature activation of zymogens within the pancreas and the pancreatic duct.
