Mutations in this gene result in epimerase-deficiency galactosemia| also referred to as galactosemia type 3| a disease characterized by liver damage| early-onset cataracts| deafness and mental retardation| with symptoms ranging from mild ('peripheral' form) to severe ('generalized' form).
