It is a fibroblast-specific protein associated with mesenchymal cell morphology and motility, is expressed during epithelial-mesenchymal transformations (EMT) in vivo. It is an improved marker for lung fibroblasts that could be useful for investigating the pathogenesis of pulmonary fibrosis.
