Proteinase K is a broad-spectrum serine protease derived from the fungus Tritirachium album. It is known for its ability to efficiently digest a wide range of proteins by cleaving peptide bonds adjacent to the carboxyl group of aliphatic and aromatic amino acids while remaining active under denaturing conditions. These capabilities lend well to applications such as DNA and RNA extraction, protein sample preparation for mass spectrometry, protein structure studies, and removal of proteins in tissue homogenates and enzyme reactions.
