Collection: Protein Digestion

Protein digestion is a biochemical process that breaks down proteins into their constituent amino acids or smaller peptide fragments. This process is crucial for the release of amino caids, which serve as building blocks for the synthesis of new proteins, as well as for the recycling of amino acids for energy production. In biological systems, protein digestion occurs naturally during the digestive process in the stomach and small intestine, facilitated by various proteolytic enzymes.

In laboratory settings, protein digestion can be carried out under controlled conditions using specific enzymes like Proteinase K. Proteinase K is a broad-spectrum serine protease derived from the fungus Tritirachium album. It is known for its ability to efficiently digest a wide range of proteins by cleaving peptide bonds adjacent to the carboxyl group of aliphatic and aromatic amino acids while remaining active under denaturing conditions. These capabilities lend well to applications such as DNA and RNA extraction, protein sample preparation for mass spectrometry, protein structure studies, and removal of proteins in tissue homogenates and enzyme reactions.
